What are amino acids?
Amino acids are the building blocks of muscle tissue and proteins. Many important physiological functions are linked to amino acids such as strength gains and muscle hypertrophy, so amino acids have become an important supplement for many bodybuilders and athletes.
They are molecules that contain an amine group, a carboxylic acid group and a side-chain that differs between various amino acids. The different amino acids can be divided into two groups:
- essential amino acids
- non-essential amino acids
There are 9 essential amino acids and they cannot be produced by the body, so they must be acquired from the food we eat. There are 12 non-essential amino acids, which can be produced by the body and so do not need to be supplied via the food that we eat.
BCAAs (Branched Chain Amino Acids)
When the body doesn’t have sufficient energy, it can break down muscle tissue for use as an energy source. During this process, three amino acids; isoleucine, leucine and valine (BCAAs) are stripped from muscle tissue and are then converted to another amino acid, alanine. This alanine is then taken to the liver where it is converted to glucose for energy.
Why are amino acids useful for bodybuilders and atheletes?
Muscle tissue is such a vital component of both strength, speed and endurance that it is no wonder that amino acids are such an important part of a bodybuilder or athlete’s diet. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and muscle tissue, so it is important that the body is supplied with essential amino acids and the ingredients of non-essential amino acids.
